Financial Environment Indicators

There are two major areas to survey when looking at the financial environment.

National Debt:

Stock Market closing prices and trends.

New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) - Houses large, older and more established companies. Many have been on the NYSE for years.

Indices:

NASDAQ - Houses newer companies that reflect newer industries, such as technology.

Morningstar Investing Center
Includes research and independent opinions on thousands of mutual funds, stocks, and hundreds of ETFs.

National And Regional Indicators

Employment - Bureau of Labor Statistics
BLC provides a list of links to employment data in the US and some international data.
Federal Reserve Bank (FRED)
The district banks of the Federal Reserve collect and present a wide array of regional economic statistics. Start with the St. Louis branch; its databas Fred has CPI, PPI, unemployment statistics and much more. Try the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta for data on the Southeast US; Boston for New England's data; Chicago for midwest manufacturing data; Cleveland; Dallas; Kansas City; Minneapolis; New York; Philadelphia; see Richmond, for mid-Atlantic states including North Carolina;
Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond
Gross Domestic Product (National, State and MSA)
The value of all finished goods and services produced within a geographic area for a
specified period of time.
Unemployment - Bureau of Labor Statistics
BLS provides unemployment statistics on the national, state, MSA and local levels. Some international data is available, as well as, mass layoff statistics.
